Filipino Ministry at the RECongress
The weekend of March 31st thru April 2nd marked the 5th year of participation of the Filipino Ministry of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles under the leadership of Sr. M. Christina Sevilla, RGS in the Religious Education Congress (RECongress) held at the Anaheim Convention Center. Our exhibit focused on our Blessed Virgin Mary entitled “Pueblo Amante de Maria” or, loosely translated, “A People in Love with Mary.”
The images of Our Lady of Manaoag, Our Lady of Antipolo (Nuestra Senora del Paz y Buen Viaje), Our Lady of Penafrancia, and Our Lady, Guide of the Way (Nuestra Senora de Guia) as well as the framed image of The Lady of All Nations were featured during said exhibit. Sr. Christina’s response to the question of how these were chosen to represent us is that “[the first three] are the Images of our Lady that were brought to the United States and has a strong base of devotees locally. The Nuestra Senor de Guia is the “oldest extant image of Mary in the Philippines” and hence deserves a place in this exhibit.”
The RECongress comes once a year and is where thousands of Catholics congregate for spiritual renewal, theological understanding and liturgical guidance. This year, a record number of members of the Filipino Ministry attended the different sessions offered. Of course, there are the multi-cultural exhibits to browse in between the sessions as well as the vendor-filled main hall where one may find different treasures to purchase – a tapestry from Italy, a book from one of the many publishers, a CD of liturgical music, and even jewelry!
