The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, in response to the significant growth of the Filipino Community through the years, formalized its outreach to the community with the creation of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry in 1990 with Msgr. Loreto (Mac) Gonzales as Director.
The integration of this outreach program into the Archdiocesan Catholic Center on September 28, 1999, feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino Saint, through the establishment of the FILIPINO MINISTRY, represents a new phase in this outreach. Sr. Mary Christina O. Sevilla, a Religious of the Good Shepherd, was appointed by Cardinal Roger Mahony, as Director. In his letter of appointment, Cardinal Mahony wrote: " One of your greatest challenges will be to build bridges between the various constituents of this ministry in order to bring the gift of the Filipino Community to the whole Church in Los Angeles.
Since 1999, the Filipino Ministry has been "building bridges" through the initiation of Archdiocesan celebrations such as the Feasts of Santo Niño, San Lorenzo Ruiz, Beatification of Blessed Pedro Calunsod, Simbang Gabi and Marian celebrations at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. These celebrations create bonds among the Filipinos and gives a sense of belonging to one Filipino Community - the 2nd largest ethnic community in the Archdiocese. It also focuses on the training and enpowerment of the lay through its Lay Leadership Formation Programs and other programs and activities for a deepen understanding and appreciation of God's gift to us of being Filipino and the rich cultural heritage that He has gifted us with as a people.
Unfortunately, in October 2002, due to lack of funds, all the Ethnic Ministries, including the Filipino Ministry, were phased-out from the Archdiocesan Catholic Center. After a series of consultation, especially with the five Regional Bishops, representatives from the Filipino Community and members of the Filipino Clergy, the office of Filipino Ministry was encouraged to continue its noble goal.
A Filipino Council of Servant-Leaders was formed in September, 2003 to service as Regional Coordinators of the
Filipino Communities
in the five regions of the archdiocese, as well as to assist and support the Office of Filipino Ministry in carrying out its mission.
